SELF-REPRESENTATION THROUGH ARTWORKS AS A WAY OF LIFE: COUNT GUSTAV ADOLF VON GOTTER (1692-1762)


The issue of self-representation in art characteristic of the 18th century is considered with reference to the personality of Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter (1692 – 1762). The author reviews various artworks that had importance in A. von Gotter’s biography and created during different stages in his life and career. Attention is focused on his world outlook and lifestyle. In particular, separate consideration is given to the count’s resident palace of Molsdorf and various portraits executed by various artists. These portraits are classified with the use of elements iconographic and stylistic analysis. Moreover, an attempt is made to identify A. von Gotter’s relations with Russia through artworks and cultural and diplomatic contacts.
