Using iconographic and stylistic analysis, the author emphasizes the importance of the tomb of Philibert II, Duke of Savoy (1480 – 1504) in the evolution of European sculpture from late Gothic to the Renaissance. The tomb of Philibert II is compared with medieval and Renaissance analogues. The result is both traditional and innovative features characteristic of this project. The various stylistic motifs of the tomb of Philibert II are considered allowing for the specific features of the region and its geographic, political and cultural context. The study shows that this artwork is unusual not only from the viewpoint of iconography but also is an early example of a harmonious combination of the Flemish and Italian stylistic tendencies. In this context, the author points to the role of the sculptors who created the tomb, and the influence of the aesthetic preferences of the project’s customer, Margaret of Austria (1480 – 1530), the Duke’s widow.
