THE HERITAGE OF ARCHITECTURAL AVANT-GUARD IN THE URALS

The heritage of architectural avant-garde in the Urals is represented by numerous industrial and civil buildings and complexes and makes up a considerable part of the built environment in many Ural cities and towns, forming urban districts and actively participating in the formation of the aesthetics of urban centres.

The article considers drivers behind the architectural and building processes during the first Soviet decades in the Urals, scales of construction, and qualitative changes in the typology and stylistic language of the architecture. The formation of the architectural heritage of avant-garde in the Ural cities and towns is reviewed with reference to Sverdlovsk (Ekaterinburg) as the centre of development and dissemination of the architecture of the Modern Movement.

This heritage, recognised by scholars as an original branch of the Russian architectural avant-garde and of the world heritage of the Modern Movement, has not been studied properly and demands steadfast attention from researchers. New pages are being regularly discovered in the history of architectural avant-garde in the Urals, such as the creativity of Bauhaus graduates and their collaboration with Soviet architects.

Key words: architecture of avant-garde, Ural architectural heritage
