SPATIAL PLANNING METHODS FOR MODERNIZATION OF UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS (with reference to the Southern Federal University)
Spatial planning issues with regard to the modernisation of university buildings, teaching and learning buildings in particular, present a priority in the higher education programmes of the government in Russia.
These issues are complex because of the sheer number of educational buildings located in various town-planning contexts, providing a variety of teaching and learning specifics and featuring a considerable range of problems and drawbacks. To be resolved, they need a systems approach.
Based on experience available in the area of reconstruction of public buildings and analysis of university facilities, the article proposes a classification of university building modernisation methods, such as:
- adaption,
- internal reconstruction,
- external reconstruction,
- re-valorisation.
For each of these methods, reconstructive actions are defined. A survey algorithm is formulated and survey parameters are identified for selection an effective method of modernisation and relevant reconstruction actions. If realized, they would allow the creation of an optimal functional and planning structure of university buildings to meet the needs of an up-to-date educational process.
Key words: modernisation, reconstruction, educational buildings, university campus
